According to the city's latest Climate Vulnerability Assessment, Leimert Park is classified as an area facing extreme heat risk with a disproportionately low tree canopy. While affluent L.A. neighborhoods often see up to 37% tree canopy coverage, the broader South L.A. region averages around 13%, with some pockets topping out at 5%.
Drought and lack of watering make trees vulnerable to shock. With the prediction of an unprecedented El Nino weather season we are likely experience heavy rain and strong winds which may cause sudden large branch falls or even worse, whole trees coming down. We can’t afford to lose any of our trees but there’s something each of us can do.
West Adams-Baldwin Hills-Leimert Park are a designated "LA REPAIR Zone".
The City budget for the current physical year 2026-2027 has been approved and implemented. Money is available with a provision for an overtime injection designed to help clear specific 311 backlogs including tree trimming and street maintenance.
This status unlocks Participatory Budgeting funds, letting community members directly vote on how local greening and infrastructure money is spent.
Leimert Park is a designated High Priority Equity Zone. As such, the city has dedicated public funds explicitly earmarked to clear our neighborhood's maintenance backlog

They are on public property (parkway) and any alterations to them may shift liability to you if the tree fails or additional large branches fall.

Step 1: Submit an immediate Tree Trimming Request
Use the MyLA311 Website, download the MyLA311 mobile app, or call 1-800-996-2489.
What to Select: Choose "Tree Trimming" as the service type.
Explicitly state if the overgrown trees are blocking streetlights, obscuring traffic signs, dropping heavy deadwood, or lifting sidewalks.

City departments are legally required to review and respond to official Neighborhood Council requests with higher priority than standard citizen complaints.

The West Adams-Baldwin Hills-Leimert Park REPAIR zone receives hundreds of thousands of dollars in city funds that are distributed via "Participatory Budgeting." As stated above, this means regular residents decide exactly which local projects get funded.
